Introduction
✔ The Sainik Schools Society (SSS) is the governing body that manages all Sainik Schools in India.
✔ It was established in 1961, under the Ministry of Defence (MoD), Government of India.
✔ The society is a registered body under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.
✔ It ensures that all Sainik Schools maintain uniform standards of education, training, and discipline, while also expanding their reach across states.
Organizational Structure
1. Chairmanship
✔ The Raksha Mantri (Defence Minister of India) is the Chairman of the Sainik Schools Society.
✔ This reflects the direct link between Sainik Schools and the Ministry of Defence.
2. Executive Committee
✔ The Board of Governors and an Executive Committee run the society.
✔ Key members:
1. Defence Secretary
2. Chief Ministers or Education Ministers of the states where Sainik Schools are located
3. Chief of Army, Navy, and Air Force (or their representatives)
4. Educationists and senior officers from MoD
3. Day-to-Day Administration
✔ Handled by the Honorary Secretary, who is generally a Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defence.
✔ The Sainik Schools Society has its office in New Delhi.
4. School-Level Administration
✔ Each Sainik School is headed by a Principal (usually a senior military officer in deputation or an experienced civilian educator).
✔ He/She is assisted by:
1. Vice Principal
2. Administrative Officer
3. Faculty members (teaching staff)
4. Military instructors for drills, NCC, and physical training
Purpose of Sainik Schools Society
✔ The SSS was created to ensure that the original vision of V.K. Krishna Menon (founder) continues in a structured and uniform way across India. Its core purposes are:
✔ To Manage Sainik Schools Nationwide
✔ Ensure that every school follows the same standard of discipline, academics, and military training.
✔ Supervise infrastructure, staff recruitment, and financial management.
✔ To Act as a Link Between States and Centre
✔ Sainik Schools are funded jointly by State Governments (infrastructure, scholarships, some expenses) and Central Government (MoD).
✔ The Society coordinates between both for smooth functioning.
✔ To Expand Defence-Oriented Education
✔ Establish new schools in underserved areas.
✔ Recently, the PPP model expansion is being implemented by the SSS.
Goals of Sainik Schools Society
1. Primary Goal – Prepare Cadets for Armed Forces
✔ Train students to join National Defence Academy (NDA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), and later become officers in the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
✔ Maintain a strong “feeder institution” role for the defence academies.
2. Holistic Education
✔ Provide CBSE-based academic excellence along with emphasis on:
✔ Physical training
✔ NCC
✔ Leadership development
✔ Sports & adventure activities
3. Equal Opportunity
✔ Provide quality education to students from rural and semi-urban backgrounds, at affordable cost.
✔ Scholarships and subsidies ensure students from modest backgrounds can join.
4. Nation-Building
✔ Instill values of patriotism, discipline, courage, and leadership.
✔ Even if a student does not join the armed forces, he/she becomes a responsible citizen contributing to nation-building.
5. Inclusivity & Modernization
✔ Expand Sainik Schools to new regions under PPP.
✔ Admit girls, making schools co-educational.
✔ Upgrade infrastructure with digital classrooms, IT-based learning, and smart facilities.
✔ Funding & Support
✔ State Governments: Provide land, initial infrastructure, and scholarships.
✔ Ministry of Defence: Provides financial support for staff salaries, training, and administration through the Sainik Schools Society.
✔ Parents: Pay a subsidized fee (much lower than private boarding schools).
